Reclining leopard cleaning his fur is what the artist observed when he saw this leopard on Africa's Veld. His carving was done on a single piece of Verdite Serpentine. Serpentine is a common mineral, usually oily green, and often used in architectural and decorative items. This carving is not signed by an artist and the stone is naturally spotted as is sometimes the case with African Verdite. The Carver may be amongst the Kenyan carvers that have died due to the aids epidemic that has decimated the carvers trade in Southern Africa. The carving measures 16" in length, about 12" in width and 5" in height.
